the 4th

BOOM! BANG! CRACK! Why do boys like noise? I have no idea... x) Personally, I like the far away, low-frequency booms (as in low-frequency-wave booms... not ones that don't happen very often. ;) This is the one day out of the year that my brother is allowed to publicly display his pyro "talents".

A lot has happened in the last couple days that I haven't had a chance to talk about. My best friend and I got to hang out two days in a row and it was awesome! We always say we're going to hang out a lot during the summer, but you know how it goes... life is busy. My parents have shown a little more spontaneity in the last couple days and I have very much enjoyed it! They invited some friends over quite randomly on Sabbath evening, and then decided that we ought to hang out on the 4th as well (today). I'm liking this! =)

My dad, brother, and I woke up at 5:00 this morning to go wakeboarding. The lake was like glass, and there was one slalom skier on the whole lake. The sky was clear so you could see Mt. Rainer in the morning sunlight and its clear reflection in the water (we were at Lake Tapps near Auburn, WA). We had wetsuits so the cold wasn't too bad. The adrenaline rush from skimming over the water and hopping the wake was plenty enough to keep you warm. =)

I have been thinking about something I noticed the other day. On the ride down from my home up north, I took a nap (which is quite normal for me, put me in a nice warm car for a couple hours and I'm zonked). Do you ever notice the feelings that run through your mind when you're in that half-conscious, almost-asleep state? The irritation that is caused by sharp noises. The comfort from a warm heater. All the feelings that are usually in your subconscious and your conscious mind blocks quite well are suddenly magnified. A person who might normally be quite tolerant of loud noises will become very irritable when they are sleepy.
We stopped by Starbucks on the drive and I heard my dad conversing with the waiter at the drive-through. The man there was quite cheerful and polite and though the intercom was loud, it was not irritating. When we drove up to the window, there was a young lady there who was not quite as warm and friendly and more efficient and impersonal. When she spoke, though it was merely to state the required payment, I felt that irritation. Then the other man came back with my parents' orders and spoke at the same volume, with the same script required of any of the workers, but in a manner that my subconscious had no problem with. Just before I fell asleep, I remember my parents commenting on how he was the kind of person every business wanted to have. I decided that that is the kind of person I want to be. Someone who is so polite and courteous that people will even subconsciously be receptive. Though one can fake manners, the human brain can pick up on the nuances of speech and tone and decide whether the person is genuine or not. I want to be genuinely kind.

Anyhow, it's time to go spend time with family and make some noise. Have a fun and safe 4th of July!
